SEA GAMES 2011 - JAKARTA PALEMBANG

The 26th edition of the South East Asia region biennial games (SEA Games) have been surrounded by controversies before it even started. Corruptions accusations and charges were aplenty leading up to the event. At some point in time, there were doubts whether the game's venues would be ready on time especially in Palembang.

There's this case of the former treasurer of Indonesia's Democrat Party arrested in Colombia after weeks on the run following corruption allegations. He is accused of accepting bribes worth almost $3m (£1.8m) in connection with tenders for the SEA Games venues and others. Muhammad Nazaruddin (pic left), 32, was detained in Cartagena city after an international manhunt recently. Read here

In the first week of the games, media reported plenty of issues pertaining to the management and operational of the games. From the lack of information of changed venues and times to the bias judging for combat sports to the media center being located on the 5th floor of a local bank in Palembang to lack of security and to the unsporting and bias games officials at Jakabaring Aquatic Center in Palembang (again!) A lot more can be mentioned but I've decided to stop at this point ;)

Nevertheless, amidst all the issues the games went on without any serious interruptions and all in the name of SEA brotherhood solidarity and harmony.

However, a new issue came up today. Which I find it amusing and really funny. It was reported that "The organisers had prepared 300 bicycles for the athletes and their officials to travel around the Jakabaring Sport city and many have been stolen due to lack of security..." Read here

OMG! This is really funny... ;)

Lets hope Naypyidaw, the new capital of Myanmar, will do a better job hosting in the 27th edition of SEA Games in 2013
