In the 13th General Election in 2013, the opposition retained the state by a bigger majority. A sign that the state administration was well received by the voters. The Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition comprises of PAS, PKR and DAP was running smoothly amidst the challenges it faced.
Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. The rosy days of PR was shaken by allegations of wrongdoings by the Chief Minister (CM) ie. Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim and internal political bickering within the PKR component party.
Calls for the CM to step down by his own party ie. PKR and supported by fellow partner DAP, went unheard. PAS, on the other hand, stood by the embattled CM.
The CM stood tall and defied his own party's call to relinquish the position. He remained steadfast and continue working for the state and to ensure the people of Selangor get the most benefits from his administration.
August 9, 2014 came the bombshell. PKR decided to sack Tan Sri Khalid from the party leaving the state administration in crisis. The CM decided to consult the Sultan of Selangor on the next cause of action.
He got the backing of the Sultan to continue working as the state's CM. His team of State Exco Members from PKR and DAP were clearly against him. Statements were made telling the public they will continue working as elected Reps and appointed exco members and will be reporting to their parties instead of to the CM. Again, PAS elected Reps and appointed Exco Members stood by the CM.
Technically, the CM is running the state as his administration and not as the PR coalition administration. Constitutionally, the defiant Exco Members ie. PKR and DAP were wrong to report to their parties instead of to the CM. They were appointed to the positions by the Sultan and on the advice and recommendation of the CM.
Thus, on August 12, 2014, the CM officially wrote a letter to the Sultan to seek his consent to sack the five defiant Exco Members from PKR and DAP. Only one PKR Exco Member and four PAS Exco Members were sparred from this sacking.
The Sultan consented and the five were sacked legally and constitutionally.
The saga continues and will continue in the days to come. It's a wait and see game now. Only time will tell...
My take on this crisis:
1. Tan Sri Khalid will join PAS and will remain as the state Chief Minister with the consent of the Sultan
2. Pakatan Rakyat (PR) is Selangor will be in shambles and PAS will weather the storm alone.
3. This issue should not have happened in the first place. Greed over rationale. It's politics. The people will suffer.
4. The Kajang Move was a stupid thing to do. You should not asked an elected representative to step down for you and/or your political cronies to step in. It's just wrong!
5. State opposition, Barisan Nasional (BN), is like a predator waiting to attack and regain the lost jewel. On the background and/or underground, whatever you like to call it, a lot of meetings, discussions, negotiations, gives and takes are taking place.
Only time will tell who wins. What is clear now, the Rakyat lost...
